Ahmedabad: Despite a big win in the previous match, India will have to find a proper solution to the questions related to the pink ball to put England in trouble in the night Test cricket match on the third day starting on Wednesday on the new fledgling pitch of Motera.
Ahmedabad is a cricketer venue that has witnessed many achievements related to Indian cricket. While Sunil Gavaskar completed 10,000 Test runs here, Kapil Dev gave his best performance with nine wickets for 83 runs here and later broke the record of Richard Hadlee’s highest Test wicket at the same ground.
Ishant Sharma to play his 100th Test match
On Wednesday, Ishant Sharma will descend on this ground to play his 100th Test match and will become the second Indian fast bowler to achieve this feat after Kapil. Where Sachin Tendulkar completed his first double century in Test matches, Ravichandran Ashwin will try to join the club to take 400 Test wickets for which he needs six wickets.
The Sardar Patel Stadium was renovated and now it looks huge but the Test match is happening here after a long time and hence Virat Kohli’s team will not expect too much profit. India would like the pitch to help the spinners so that they can take a 2–1 lead, but how the pitch will behave remains to be seen.
Senior batsman Rohit Sharma had clarified the opinion of the team regarding the pitch. He wants a pitch that helps spinners like Ashwin and Akshar Patel. In the same way as those who prefer the crooked pitch at Root Handigley or Old Trafford.
But there are some questions that both teams will try to find answers to.
How will the evening of Bella be for the batsmen as James Anderson believes that the ball will swing more during this time. Will the SG Test add extra smoothness to the pink ball, making it difficult for the pair of Ashwin and Akshar, who showed the English batsmen on the day in the second Test match at Chepauk.
Not only this, the match will start at 2:30 in the afternoon and will Deo play his part in the final session? At that time it would not be easy for slow bowlers to make a grip on the ball. When such things are not known, then any captain would think it appropriate to assess the situation as Ishant said on Monday.
Johnny Bairstow will replace Dan Lawrence at number three
Ishant said, “We are playing this test with a pink ball so we don’t know how to overcome them.” His rival bowler Anderson, however, believes that he should be in front of him when the match started. The wicket will be as it was in Chepauk. Umesh Yadav has been successful in fitness test and this is good news for India. In this case, Kuldeep Yadav can be excluded from the playing XI. Umesh and Ishant had dismissed Bangladesh twice in six sessions in the first day night Test match played in Kolkata.
But England have players like Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Johnny Bairstow who will pose a tough challenge. Hardik Pandya has been included in the Test team to reduce the workload of the bowlers but it is not sure whether the team is considering him ready for the Test match. Moin Ali has returned overseas due to England’s rotation policy and in such a situation, Dom Bess can be included in the spin department along with Jack Leach. But it is not sure whether Stuart Broad or Mark Wood will get a place in the playing XI with Anderson and Joffra Archer.
In addition, talented batsman Jock Crawley could be retained in the playing XI in place of Rory Burns while Johnny Bairstow will be replaced by Dan Lawrence at number three.
The teams are as follows:
India: Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Riddhiman Saha (wicket keeper), R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav , Akshar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ishant Sharma, Jaspreet Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Umesh Yadav.
England: Joe Root (captain), James Anderson, Joffra Archer, Johnny Bairstow, Dominic Bess, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jack Crawley, Ben Fox, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Dom Sibley, Ben Stokes, Ollie Stone, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood. The match will start at 2:30 in the afternoon.
